Chant Will Renew Sacred Music, Says Vatican Aide

Chant Will Renew Sacred Music, Says Vatican Aide

Notes Its Link to Liturgical Texts

ROME, OCT. 7, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Sacred music cannot be limited to Gregorian chant, but it is chant that contains the key to renew liturgical song, according to a consultor for the Office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff.

Father Uwe Michael Lang, also an official of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, made this observation Wednesday at a lecture at l'Accademia Urbana delle Arti in Rome.

Learning About Gregorian Chant - CD

Learning About Gregorian Chant - CD (for sale at Ignatius Press)

Monks of Solesmes Abbey

The leading masters of Gregorian chant, the monks of Solesmes, simplify and clarify the world of chant. The combination of a clearly understood text with the fluidly sung examples convinces the listener that Gregorian chant is open to everyone for enjoyment and prayer. A valuable resource for educators, students and anyone who loves Chant. Chants include Psalms, Proper and Ordinary of the Mass, the Divine Office, and more – 19 chants.

Fr. Z's prescription for what ails us

From Fr. Z's blog:

I urge all priests and bishops who read this blog with any slight quaver of resonance or benevolence, to consider this with care:

If you sense that
something quite serious and important is going on right now, for the love of God rethink your approach to how you foster Holy Church’s proper public worship.

Do all in your power and through your influence to foster a worship of God which conforms not to worldly goals – as praiseworthy as they may be in a world still dominated by its dire prince – but rather to the real point of religion: an encounter with mystery.

Our worship must become more and more focused on the one who is Other. Seek what is truly above in your rites and raise people to encounter mystery.

You will be challenged and reviled, blocked and attacked as you do. You will be worn down and afraid under the weight of resistance.

But I think that to save the world we must save the liturgy.

schola alert!!

Since a good part of the schola was present at the bishop's lenten mission at the Cathedral, I suggested that we might sing the O Salutaris and the Tantum Ergo at the closing session tomorrow (Wed). The Bishop thought it was a good idea.
Let's try to run through the pieces ahead of time, and we can sit together in the main body of the Church toward the rear or in one of the side chapels.
